Interior design, restoration, remodeling, space plan, color, lighting graphics, signage and displays for a boutique wine shop. Shelving was designed to dynamically convey the shops’ extensive, signature wine selection by filling the entire expanse of the wall. Lighting was designed to advertise the store in the evening. All signs were painted to maintain a vintage feel and historic style. The welcoming ambiance in the space accommodates wine tastings and events.
“At night when I’m shutting down the store I stand back in utter awe and amazement at what we’ve created here. This store is a real work of art. Business is booming and we've opened a second location using the same design. People love coming in and sales prove it. I’m so glad that I hired you.” – Flavio Gentile, Owner, Printers Row Wine Shop
The entire boutique retail space was restored from the uncovered original hardwood floors up to the tin ceiling, then outfitted with custom woodwork and cabinetry. The design plan was duplicated into a second sister store in Chicago’s Little Italy.
Design of sculpture, logo, logotype and print collateral for the world headquarter offices of Equity International, a real estate development company.
The 36 foot structure of sculpted, bronzed wood was engineered so that the elements appear to be floating over panels of etched glass, which in turn appear to float away from the wall. Installed in the main entry area of the offices, it is the first thing seen upon entry and makes a statement that reflects the global culture. The etched, mirrored glass panels reflect light, adding illumination to an otherwise dark hallway, providing a welcoming glow to lead the visitor into reception.
"April has performed as collaborator. She has worked directly with my clients. Either relationship delivers an enjoyable period of creation and to the point wonderful product with happy clients." – Bill Bartolotta, Creative Director, Equity
The corporate logo was cast in bronze and mounted to a section of the frosted glass face of the entry wall, and also applied to their website and print collateral. The logotype was manufactured in brushed aluminum and applied to the wood wall panel in the lobby and to the front of the reception desk.

"I had the pleasant experience of hiring April Uhlir. Her design skills far exceeded what I expected. She took my 35-year-old condo with a dark and enclosed kitchen and turned it into a contemporary living space. Most impactful was her design of a kitchen island that opened up my old kitchen and allowed sunlight from all directions to illuminate not only my new kitchen, but also the rest of the space. It is now a work of art! I highly recommend Ms. Uhlir for your design needs and renovation. I found her to be adept, professional, efficient and intelligent, with a wide array of knowledge in the design field." – E. F. Roos, Homeowner

Interior design of residence. This 1896 loft features exposed brick, cedar beams and cast iron fixtures. I remodeled the space to expand functionality by adding private rooms separated by sliding translucent glass doors. Indigenous limestone was chosen for the central eight-foot kitchen island, stone hearth and window sills. Reclaimed timber was used for the mantel and incorporated throughout; for closet shelving and kitchen shelving. The two-story living area features a modern chandelier and can be viewed from the sliding translucent window in the upstairs bedroom. Custom forged stained glass bannister railings on the stairs match the guard railing on the second level.
